Smallmouth bass flying fish or Micropterus dolomieui is found throughout North America and originated from upper and middle Mississippi River basin, and Hudson River basin. This is also popular sporting fish because of its jumping ability. Other names for Smallmouth bass are Smallie, Brownie, Bronzeback, Bronze bass and Brown bass.
Smallmouth prefers cooler temperature and usually found in rivers, streams, rocky areas and stumps and also in sandy bottoms of lake and reservoir. Smallmouth is function well in warm, shallow, weedy water when other predator not there. This fish is feed on smaller fish,crayfish and insects that trapped in water surface. Females Smallmouth bass are bigger than the males. Their life span is up to 13 years. The shape of the lakeside smallmouth bass that live in sandy areas has oval shaped. While the river water smallmouth bass that live in the dark water has torpedo shaped. River water smallmouth
among the dark water has very dark brown color while those in lakeside smallmouth bass has light yellow brown. Their upper jaw does not extend beyond rear margin of the eye. The color of their eye is red.
Smallies are sight feeders and usually they are inactive at night when they can be easily approached by SCUBA divers. Lower light periods such as dusk and dawn are their peak feeding periods. Smallmouth will use depth for hiding. They will move in shoals that are based on size. And they are built to swim in the swift current of the river.
