Fishing is the art of presenting a lure or bait in a manner that a fish will strike at it. This presentation can be done in more then one way. A normal rod and reel uses weights attached to the line to assist in casting. the light line is hidden from the fish. Fly fishing involves a heavy line that will guide the fly to it’s destiny. This heavy tapered line does not require weights.

The fly is a hairy or furry item tied to a hook with thread. It can be man made or natural like feathers or fur. These can be many colors and a few different sizes. They are lightweight and can float or sink in the water. This is the difference between wet and dry flies.

Casting or presenting your fly to the fish is the art of the sport. You do not cast and point like a normal rod and reel. It is the fast forward and stopping action that gets the fly to your desired location. You want the fly to land as naturally as possible onto the water where it will sit or sink. If a fish does not strike shortly you lift the fly off the water and try again.

You can fly fish for many species of fish including trout, salmon, panfish, bass, and others. River or stream fishing for trout and salmon are the commonest locations for fly fishing. Fly fishing takes alot of practice but you will enjoy the action.

Keep in mind that fly fishing takes a lot of practice and determination. You will not just be able to pick up the rod right away and be good. When practicing, you can tie a ball of yarn on the end of the rod instead of using a fly. You will probably want to use your dominant hand to cast with and the other hand will be for control. First thing is to make sure that you have a firm grip on the fly rod, with your thumb on top of the rod. When casting, make sure that you lock your wrist. You want to allow your elbow to bend, not your shoulder or wrist. You want to use the same movement that you use to hammer something into a wall. Another important thing is that your cast should gradually build speed as your throw the fly out towards the water, and remember that the fly is going to follow your rod tip. A commonly used metaphor in fly fishing for casting is called ten and two. You can basically think of a giant clock right next to you while you’re casting. When you cast your rod forward, your rod should stop at the ten o clock hand on the clock and your back cast should stop near the two o clock hand on the clock. Timing your starts and stops is very important when trying to get a nice accurate cast. When you first begin fly fishing, you can turn your head to watch the fly go over you. This is done so you can see when the line is straightened out and when to begin the forward cast. Learning to stop both forward and backwards casts is crucial to becoming a good fly fisher. To help make the next cast easier, strip the line off the water with your other hand, so you can control how much line you’re throwing out each time.

Fly fishing is just another form of fishing, that really is not to hard to do. It’s important to know that different tackle and flies are used for different species of fish. Fly fishers mostly focus on fishing for trout. There are several different types of trout; these include rainbow, brown, brook, golden, steelhead, and lake trout. Fly fishing can be awfully expensive, but do not go out and blow a bunch of money on a nice fly rod if you are a beginner. When fly fishing for trout, be sure that you use a light tippet. Trout are a smart species of fish and will be able so see your tippet or hook if they are too heavy or big. As for what flies to use when trout fishing depends on what kind of water you are fishing in. Dry flies are very popular, but stay on top of the water. Other flies are meant to go underwater, which can be a very good place to fly fish for trout. This is because trout mostly feed at the bottom of rivers and creeks. Only when there is a large insect at the surface do trout come up to feed there. An important thing to keep in mind when fly fishing for trout, is to always be aware of what the environment is around you. What I mean by that is if there aren’t many surface insects around, then you’re going to want to change to something that can dive under the water. Trout love to sit right where the fast water meets the slow water. This is the first place I would look for when trying to hook a trout. Some good fly patterns to try are woolly bugger, red fox squirrel tail, or parachute adams.

There’s a special quality about the early morning air that seems to encourage fish to do things they won’t do later in the day.

There’s a special quality about the early morning air that seems to encourage fish to do things they won’t do later in the day. Rising to shallow water along a lake shore or near the banks of a stream pool is not out of the ordinary for early morning behavior. These are times with a special solitude, as well as ample light for the fish to spot a bug or even a bait.

For this reason, when setting out on foot in the early AM, it’s always a good idea to approach the water’s edge very slowly. Some fishermen use a method similar to stalking, by stopping and crouching to eye the surface of the water from a distance. Many times this will disclose a fish that would have spooked, and been gone for the rest of the day.

Being familiar with the approach area helps as well. Some fly fishermen don’t start fishing until they’re either at the water’s edge or wading. But many a nice fish has been hooked by presenting a fly from a grassy area or a clearing, well back from the water.

When reaching the bank, it’s best to acclimate to the feel of the morning before starting to fish. Even in cases where the hatch is right and there is some activity, noticing the way things may be moving is a good way to stay on the fish. Chasing is never recommended since fish tend to come back to certain areas and this is especially true in the early morning. The fisherman who can find ways to be invisible will sometime find fish at his or her feet.

1.Fly – It is the one tied to the hook and used as a bait. It weighs very little. Some fly fishers also use live bait like crayfish, minnow, bloodworms and leeches. But most of fly fishers use artificial fly that is constructed from various furs, feathers, threads and hooks. Artificial fly is used as imitation of insects on which the fish is feed and because artificial fly is so colorful, it attracts the attention of the fish.

2.Fly rod – It is a device used in sport fishing that made of a long pole with a line held in place alongside it with the use of guides. Fishing rod has many sizes and the longer the rod the greater advantage in casting. There are different types of rod such as carbon fiber rod, fly rod, tenkara rod, IM/Modulus, Spin and bait casting rods, Spinning rods, Ultra-light rods, Ice rods, Sea rods, Surf rod, trolling rod, tand elescopic rod. Modern rods are made of fiberglass and grphite composite. But originally fly rods were made from split Tonkin bamboo, Calcutta reed, or ash wood. Today split Tonkin bamboo rods are still popular in fly fishing.

3.Fly reel – It is used to store fishing lines that help the fisher retrieve and land a hooked fish. This is a solution that is created by the fishers because the fishers wanted to have a more fly line available to cast.

4.Fly line – Fly line is a weighted line that is thrown out into the water at various length and distance. This also comes in densities and tapers. This is the most important part in the delivery system that sends the fly to the fish.

5.Fly hook – Fly hook is where in which the fly is placed on. There are different hooks like dry fly hooks, lure hooks or double hooks.

6.Fly boxes – This is a box where the fisher place the flies. Having a good quality box saves the fishers some money for buying new flying boxes again.

7.Fly fishing clothes – Fly fishing clothes like fishing hat, fishing waistcoat and polaroid sunglasses are very important too because eye protection is needed to protect the eyes from the sun or flying objects that blown by the wind.

I bought my husband to be Redington Fly Fishing Reels for his last birthday in August of 2009. He told me it was the absolutely best gift ever. He is a hunter and fisherman in his spare time and I had overheard him telling my dad that his fly fishing reel kept catching so I went out and got him a new reel. He loves to go fly fishing so I went for the Redington Fly reel and I am so glad I did. Their reputation for quality and value is what drove me to their reel.

We went out camping the following weekend with my parents and he got to try out the new Redington Fly Fishing Reel. It was the Fly 2 Reel. He loved the one way clutch and said it was super easy to use. My dad was using a Redington Rise Fly Fishing Reel so they were comparing the style, the weight, and how easy they both were to use. Seems they both have that great one way clutch system. Smooth was the word they were using when talking about its operation.

His Redington Fly Fishing Reel was in burnt orange and he said I made a great choice. Now he says he would like a Reddington Rod to go with his new reel. With the holidays coming up soon I guess I know what to get him this year. The Reddington Rod and Reel Company makes gift giving simple. Every fisherman loves the brand and its quality and performance. My family highly reccommends them.

When you are considering the question “how to fly fish lily pads?” her are a few things to keep in mind.

When you are considering the question “how to fly fish lily pads?” her are a few things to keep in mind. First consider what is the best season for the fish you are going after, second pay close attention to water depth and third think about your technique.

As an example if you are fly fishing bass, the best season is the spring spawn when they like to use lily pads as cover for their spawning. Another good season is during the summer, early in the morning. Lily pads attract forage for many fish, so early in the morning when many species feed, is generally a good time.

Another important consideration is water depth. You will have better results if you stick to fishing pads that are in about two to three feet of water. At this depth there is a much better chance of having a school of fish.

Now for a little technique. Some with experience suggest using a popper on the surface and a weedless hook to avoid getting snagged. One strategy is to cast over the far side of the pads by about two to three feet, then slowly bring your lure right up to the edge of the lily pads and be ready! Work the lure all along the far edge of the pads. If there is no action on the back edge try repeating the process along the front.

So if you are thinking about how to fly fish lily pads, give these suggestions a try, and if you feel generous you can even share some points with your friends.

The earliest accounts of fly fishing come from the ancient Romans who mention it in texts as early as the 2nd century when Claudius Aelianus wrote about Macedonians who made fake flies from red wool and feathers. However, modern fly fishing probably developed in England and Scotland using techniques similar to modern techniques in the 15th century. England and Scotland contained a large amount of shallow, weedy rivers making the sport popular and rewarding.
Technical innovations pushed the sport further in the 1800s such as the introduction of bamboo rods and silk lines. Bamboo rods were further refined as American rod builders developed advanced rod building techniques that involved cutting the bamboo into strips before gluing the bamboo back together around a solid core. After World War II fiberglass became a popular material for fly rod construction and today they are made from graphite compounds.
Innovation has driven the sport from its humble roots. The fly reel was invented by Lee Wulf who also invented the fishing vest, something a good fly fisherman can’t live without. Another necessity is the artificial fly which has evolved dramatically and many books have been written describing the best ways to make realistic and tempting flies.
Fly fishing in 19th century England was looked at as an elitist sport, but changes in technology have made the sport enjoyable and affordable for a large group of people in search of the perfect fly, the perfect cast, and the perfect stream.

With respect to fly fishing for trout, the fly reel is basically just a place to store one’s fly line when they are not casting. So, why should anyone pay an exorbitant amount of money for a reel? This is a good question that must have been discussed when the brain-trust at Okuma was considering delving into the fly fishing market. Okuma offers an extensive selection of fly fishing reels that all come in at under $200.

Anglers are often forced to choose between quality and affordability when building their gear arsenal, but this is not the case with Okuma fly fishing reels. Many of their products boast features like a multi-disk, cork drag system and large arbors that are normally only found on reels costing twice as much, and the look of these reels is so aesthetically pleasing that many will wonder if they really are a bargain-basement product.

Okuma offers eight models of fly fishing reels. The Cascade is an entry-level reel that offers anglers a durable and functional product for under $40. For those fly fishermen who want a hot looking reel with all the high-end features, the Helios fits the bill and costs an astoundingly low $189. All Okuma reels get the job done and they can be trusted to perform under pressure when that large trout makes a sizzling run into the backing.

Fly anglers could spend up to $500 on a reel, but why? Okuma fly fishing reels perform as well as any other reels on the market at a fraction of the price.
